Walking In Garden

Whilst fostering is a deeply rewarding vocation that is open to almost everyone, there are some things that you must be able to offer beforehand:

  1. You must be able to offer a spare bedroom. It doesn’t matter whether your home is a house or flat, in a town or the countryside, or rented or owned.
  2. You must be available to a foster child whenever needed. This may be during the daytime, if schooling is disrupted. This is often easier for couples to ensure than single carers, but some of our carer’s are single and can foster just as well as anyone else with a reliable support network.
  3. Willing to learn: no one knows it all. Some people think they do, but they don’t. we are looking for people that are willing to learn and develop their skills and qualities further.
  4. Enthusiasm and personal drive: no agency wants foster carer’s who take forever to do the most trivial of tasks and sighs deeply whenever asked to do something. we are more interested in people who are enthusiastic about what they do; completing tasks with excellence and always looking forward to the next one.
  5. We are looking for foster carers who can think outside of the box; you come up with things rather than sit and wait until things come to you. You must be a starter. Not a follower.
  6. Positive communication skills including all levels of communication such as verbal/speaking, interacting with people, writing and expressing yourself clearly.

There are also some things which will be of benefit to you and us in your fostering career:

  1. It would be helpful for you to have experience of caring for children other than your own as this brings knowledge and practice of boundary setting with youngsters who have not grown up in your own household from day one.
  2. Inner cities are often well served by reliable and regular local transport networks, but suburbs and rural areas much less so. Depending on where you live, being a car owner/driver may be essential.

At Family First Fostering, we know that fostering is one of the most valuable, life changing and fulfilling tasks in society. Caring for a child or young person who cannot live with their own parents demonstrates a generosity of spirit and an openness of heart that we recognise and value immensely. In return, we offer you round-the-clock, 24/7 support so that as a Family First Fostering foster carer you are never on your own. You can learn more about how to become a foster carer on our assessment page.

To become a carer with Family First Fostering, you need no specific qualifications other than an enjoyment of children and young people, the ability to provide them with a secure, caring family life and the commitment to attend relevant training courses and support groups.
